COLLAGE II (scroll down for english)

COLLAGE (part two english)

A promise is a promise. As I said on the first part of this post, here you will find a tiny selection of the thousands and thousands of contemporary collage artists that are working nowadays.

Joaquim Schmid and the Photogenic Drafts that he created in the 90s are the best starting point to talk about those who work the photo collage portraiture.

John Stezaker follows the same path. Both together could even be part of the “reasonable resemblances” of the Spanish blog, El Otro Blog by Pedro Arroyo  ( correction: I just revisited Pedro Arroyo's reasonable resemblances facebook album and realized that this comparison already was there!). But the difference between them is that while Schmid worked with any kind of images, Stezaker used Hollywood movie stars portraits to build new and impossible ones that can be seen at MOMA.

Bobby Neel Adams follows the same track formally, but not conceptually. His project Family Tree is made by gluing two portraits of family relatives such as mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, brothers and sisters, etc.

Sabrina Jung also has a series called Schöne Frauen (Beautiful Women) that talks about portraiture. Her collages are made by vintage black and white photos of ladies, to whom she attaches faces of contemporary models in color. In one other project called Masken (Mask), she creates new fictional characters full of humor just masking small parts of their faces.

Lola Dupre has also to be named when talking about collage. She makes wonderful deformed reconstructions of portraits of known and unknown people.

One of the recurring themes when talking about collage is the eroticism and pornography. Specialized magazines are the main source of images for this kind of creations. Vanessa Lamounier is a great example of the use of the photo collage when it gets close to pornography.

Mario Zoots, also uses pornographic magazines for his creations and following a similar way, but in his case the final collages look a little softer than Lamouniers.

If we keep on going with artists who use magazines as source for their images, we can talk about Gordon Magnin’s work. He is an American artist based in Los Angeles that cuts and pastes geometrical shapes out of fashion editorials and advertisements of magazines creating new beautiful images.

Now we leave behind these uses of commercial images and go for a much more conceptual use of the collage starting with Vlatka Horvat. Most of her compositions talk about the human body and its relation with what it is surrounded of.

Nathaniel Whitmcomb also talks about human figure in his Thought Orbs project. There he isolate different people just leaving a little piece of their surrounding images that works as some kind of mental thought bubble.

Another artist who isolates people and at the same time uses pornographic images as some other creators that I named before is James Gallagher. He uses catalogue and illustrated book pages as background that sometimes also help to transmit the main message of the collage.

There is also a trend of minimalist collage and Anthony Zinonos could be one the best on this style. Just with a tiny little piece of an image and a plain color background paper he is able to create beautiful evocative images.

Clara Mata also creates minimalistic collages and she is the first of some Spanish artists that I’m going to list now. Her postcards and handmade collages are the two sections that I like best of her work.

El Señor García also follows that minimalistic track successfully, adding a sort of narrative or cinematographic language to it, especially on his collage series.

Photo collage images are usually made by people who come from the painting or graphic art world. Iñigo Aragón’s La Sombra en el Cesped (The Shadow on the Grass) is one of the last years most successful projects made by a photographer in Spain.

Marta Pina not only creates wonderful collages but also has created an independent publishing house called Pusilánime where she published graphic art books by different artists.

Gloria Vilches is the last artist that I’m going to write about. I first heard about her through my friend Bárbara and I’ve been following her work since then. Her work is always formally well-done, evocative and critic, a combination that makes her work one of my favorite of all the artists that you just saw.

Let me just recommend a couple of books of photo collage that I’ve seen lately. The first one is Jens F. by Collier Schorr. It is a limited, signed, amazingly printed edition published by Steidl that costs 200 Euros (250 dollars). A cheaper one (40 euros- 50 dollars) is Drop of Dreams by Japanese artist Toshiko Okanoue edited by Nazraeli Press, which in my opinion is one of the best photo book publishing houses nowadays. If you want to keep on researching in the contemporary photo collage world, here you have some of the sources that I used to write this post: this wonderful just released book titled Cutting Edges, this specialized website of the cut and paste world or Jörg M. Colberg’s section about photo collage of his amazing and really well-done website Conscientious.
